AmeriCorps Programs

Senior Connections

The Senior Connections AmeriCorps program has served partner agencies in the GRADD area since 1997, providing more than 675 people the opportunity to serve their community for a year while earning a living allowance and education award.

Our mission is to reduce the rate of hospitalization of Medicare beneficiaries by providing improved nutrition, socialization, and disaster preparedness information.

AmeriCorps members are placed with non-profit, faith based, and community based agencies where they help with home delivered meals, congregate meals, food pantries, community gardens , as well as the annual 'Feed Seniors Now' food drive. Members also provide socialization through friendly visits, telephone reassurance, employment assistance, disaster preparedness, and a wide range of site-based activities and services.

Our partner service sites include: Senior Citizen Centers, Senior Living Facilities, Hospice organizations, Career Centers, Housing Authorities, Community Garden Projects, State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP), Family Caregiver Program, Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program, and public safety agencies that play a role in disaster preparedness.

Qualified host agencies can sponsor AmeriCorps members for a cash match of $5,250. These funds cover administration, travel, training, and insurance.

Members serve a minimum of 1,700 hours of community service with an assigned service site; roughly equal to full-time employment for a year. The program starts on September 1st each year, with member recruitment beginning in July; however, applications may be submitted any time. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age, have necessary legal documents for employment and pass three background checks. We want half of our members each year to be age 55 or older. There is no upper age limit.

Member Benefits include:

   • A minimal living allowance of $13,732 paid out over 24 equal pay periods.
   • A $5,920 education award upon the completion of 1,700 hours of service.
   • Health insurance is provided if the member is not eligible for Medicaid.
   • Student loans may be placed in forbearance for the duration of member's service.
   • Childcare assistance is available, if eligible.
   • Individuals may serve in AmeriCorps for two years and earn two education awards.

Members are expected to participate in AmeriCorps training, service projects, and recognition events including: Enrollment and orientation, Senior Day Out at the Mall, AmeriCorps Launch, Make a Difference Day, 'Feed Seniors Now' food drive, Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training, MLK Jr. Day of Service, Volunteer Appreciation event, and Celebration of Service.

AmeriCorps programs are made possible by a grant from the Corporation for National Community Service and through the state commission Serve Kentucky.
