April is Child Abuse Prevention Month, a time for raising awareness in communities nation-wide for the prevention of child abuse and neglect.

Owensboro Innovation Middle School is partnering with the Green River Area Development District on April 1, 2022, to begin the month-long observation by planting pinwheels on the lawn of Kentucky Wesleyan College.  The planting event will begin at 12:15 p.m. with a proclamation from the Honorable Al Mattingly declaring April as Child Abuse Prevention Month in Daviess County.

Ashley Nash, teacher at iMiddle, stated “Throughout the month of April, the iMiddle 8th graders will write and record public service announcements encouraging members of our community to join together to prevent child abuse.  This project provides students not only the opportunity to develop written and verbal communication skills, but also immerses them in an important social issue.” As the national symbol of child abuse prevention, the blue pinwheels will remain throughout the month on the KWC lawn which will also be the location for the annual STAND Against Child Abuse on April 22, 2022, 4:30-7:00 p.m.  Agencies and organizations interested in participating in the STAND can contact Kristy James, Community Collaboration for Children Program Coordinator.
