Description: The LWCF provides federal grant funds to protect important natural areas, acquire land for outdoor recreation and to develop or renovate public outdoor recreation facilities such as campgrounds, picnic areas, sports & playfields, swimming facilities, boating facilities, fishing facilities, trails, natural areas and passive parks. The minimum grant amount is $25,000, with the maximum grant amount being $250,000. It is a matching reimbursement program.

Eligibility: Cities, counties, state and federal agencies are eligible to apply for funding.

Dates: Application cycle is typically February through May.

Description: The Recreational Trails Program (RTP) is funded by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). It can be used to provide assistance for acquisition of easements, development and/or maintenance of recreational trails and trailhead facilities for both motorized and non-motorized use. The Recreational Trails Program benefits communities and enhances quality of life. All trails that have received FHWA funding must remain open to the public and maintained for perpetuity. The minimum grant request is $25,000.00; the maximum grant request is $250,000.00.

Eligibility: Eligible applicants are city and county governments, state and federal agencies. Non-profit organizations must partner with a governmental entity.

Dates: Application cycle is typically February through May.

Description: The cabinet is accepting grant proposals for projects that promote the use of recycled Kentucky waste tires in the form of crumb rubber or other tire-derived products that meet the criteria of the grant program.

This grant has focused on funding crumb rubber mulch for landscaping projects in recent years, but the cabinet is encouraging applicants to expand the scope of potential projects for this grant cycle.  In addition to landscaping mulch projects, the cabinet will consider requests for: walking trails; poured-in-place playgrounds, sidewalks or other surfaces; horse trailer or stall mats; tree wells or other products utilizing recycled Kentucky tires. 

This grant is a 75/25 match grant: the applicant shall provide match funding equal to at least 25% of the total cost of the project.

Eligibility: Applicants must meet the eligibility criteria, but may include:

  • Private entities
  • Owners of commercial entities operating within the Commonwealth of Kentucky
  • Public school districts
  • Private schools
  • City and county governments
  • Entities operating public parks, and
  • State agencies.

Dates: Application deadline is typically the first of April.
